History
The first families to settle in the area were George and Elizabeth Sloan, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Kime and Oscar Farmer. Today, The Willard North Elementary and Junior High Schools are located on land than once belonged to Oscar Farmer himself. The first home built in Willard was built by George Sloan in 1860 and is still in use today.
Willard began to expand rapidly in 1870 when the US Congress in an effort to encourage westward expansion gave land grants to railroad companies. The St. Louis and San Francisco railroad laid track from Springfield, Missouri through Willard on its way to Kansas City. The city was then named Willard after William Willard of Lebanon, Missouri who worked for the railroad, determining the path of the tracts.
