History

Springfield, Missouri was a main stage for early events in America’s history.  Springfield was the site for many battles during the Civil War, ensuing The Battle of Wilson’s Creek, Battle of Pea Ridge and the 1st and 2nd Battles of Springfield. Two years after the war had ended the Springfield National Cemetery was created and is where both solders from the North and South were laid to rest.

In 1960 The National Park Service recognized the significance of the area and designated Wilson’s Creek a national battlefield. Springfield was also a significant location during the Wild West era of our nation’s history.

In July of 1865 in the town square the nation’s first and only recorded duel shootout took place between Wild Bill Hickok and Davis Tutt Jr. following a poker game in the Lyon House Hotel on South Street. Today, two small brass plaques have been inlaid in the pavement on Park Central Square where the two men stood during the famous event.
