The city of Nixa was named after a blacksmith named Nicholas A Inman who lived in the area during the time the town was being established. Nixa has purchased 39 acres of land for the sole purpose of increasing recreational amenities offered to the residents of Nixa. The Nixa Recreation and Aquatics Center was built in 2002 on part of the 39 acres and offers many community based events and activities throughout the year which are unique to Nixa.
Several events include an annual Freeze Disk Golf Tournament in January, a father/daughter dance in February and a Spring Break Camp for children. The center also offers a variety of classes for adults, including ceramics, yoga, archery and many fitness classes.

The Landers Theatre was built in 1909 and is the oldest and largest civic theatre in Missouri. Another interesting fact about the theatre is that it was the 35th theatre in the world to acquire and play sound with film.
