History
Battlefield is named after the second major battle of the Civil War, which occurred in 1861 at nearby Wilson’s Creek. The first Union general, Nathaniel Lyon, was killed at this site. There are several landmarks throughout the city to commemorate its history.

Battlefield is home to Battlefield Mall, which is the largest mall in the Springfield area. Battlefield Mall’s anchor stores are Dillard’s, Macy’s, JCPenney, and Sears. Other brand-name stores include Banana Republic, Bath & Body Works, Chico’s, Coach, LOFT, Sephora, and White House Black Market. The mall’s restaurants include the popular Nakato Japanese Steakhouse, Hu Hot Restaurant, and Ruby Tuesday. In addition to Battlefield Mall, Battlefield is twenty minutes from Springfield’s eclectic downtown boutiques and eateries. Some popular area restaurants include Haruno Japanese Sushi Bar, Grad School, Arris Pizza, Ocean Zen Pacific Rim, Kai, Gailey’s Breakfast Café, Springfield Brewing Company, and The Grotto.

Republic R-III includes Republic Early Childhood Center, Lyon Elementary, McCulloch Elementary, Schofield Elementary, Republic Middle School, and Republic High School. Springfield Public Schools is the state’s largest, and includes 36 elementary schools, an intermediate school, nine middle schools, and five high schools. Springfield Public Schools also has an early childhood center and a gifted education center. All of Springfield’s high schools are A+ Schools and GreatSchools has given Battlefield’s Wilson’s Creek 5-6 Intermediate Center its highest rating.
For acute health care, Battlefield is served by St. John’s Health System, Lakeland Regional Hospital, and Cox Health. The area airport is Springfield-Branson National Airport, and Highway 160 is the city’s major arterial.
